The No True Scotsman Fallacy

The No True Scotsman fallacy is a friend for all of us [sarcasm]. It allows everyone to be included. Even though there is a saying that "All Scotsmen eat Haggis" Your dad is still a Scotsman because he is Scottish.

The thing is this law has a deadly repercussion. Anyone who is in the  same group/title of people of you is still considered one of you.

One argument Christians use is that atheist have no moral compass- history has been shown that through Mao, Stalin, etc (This argument is dumb but well known).  This can easily be reversed to about anyone. For example, religious people cause wars because of the crusades and other things of the like. Your response to either of those situations can't be, "They weren't real..." because of the no true Scotsman fallacy.

As a Christian I like to know what other people of different minds think. My first day as a user on Reddit. I posted "I'm a Christian. Debate me." on r/atheism. That's when I met the no true Scotsman fallacy.

What I recently realized is that many people have different interpretation to words. For example the phrase "good person" can be defined many ways. Some could say that a good person is someone who does things for others and is kind. Others could say you are only a good person with Jesus. Standards and other variables affect someone's interpretation of a loose term. A triangle has the set definition of a three sided polygon but what does it mean to be "nice". Do you mean cool, or something deeper.

It's like those things when people say "You're not a chef until you've cooked...". Most people don't take these sayings literally but (I use christianity because of my knowledge of it) what does it mean to be a Christian?

I break down the word to get the definition. Christian- Christ like. It's quite simple really. He had faith in himself. He hurt no one without reason. He loved all except figs. He didn't protest funerals or start wars. He was a good guy.

The loophole of the No True Scotsman Fallacy is the definition of the word in the eyes of the person making the claim but if they're not thinking enough to find it then you deserve the win in the debate.
